Beverly Cleary always saw herself as being a writer one day. Over the years, she kept a journal, in which she wrote dreams, frustrations, and thoughts. She finally began writing with the hopes of publishing in 1950. Cleary says in interviews that she would normally write in the morning while making bread. She did not write with the intention of teaching children anything. Her writing is simply for child enjoyment, so she puts plenty of humor in her books, writes on topics that she knows they will enjoy, and keeps it simple.
Beverly Cleary believes that writing is improved through reading. Growing up, she loved reading, especially when her mother read aloud to her and her father. When children have written letters to her asking for tips about writing she has told them that if they just read a wide variety of books while growing up, when the time comes writing will come naturally.
