D.E.A.R...
Drop Everything And Read
How did it begin?
Beverly Cleary was inspired to write about D.E.A.R. in her book Ramona Quimby, Age 8 (pages 40-41) after she received many letters from her readers expressing their wonderful experiences with D.E.A.R. programs in their own schools. After Cleary wrote about D.E.A.R. in Ramona Quimby, Age 8 the program became very popular, and thus Beverly Cleary's name is now associated with the program nationwide.
What is it?
D.E.A.R. is a nationwide event in which everyone is encouraged to make reading their number one priority.
When is it?
The official start of the even is on April 12th in honor of Beverly Cleary's birthday. The event is a month long, but can be done at anytime throughout the year and anywhere (home, school, the library, anywhere).
